One scene that highlights a language difference in "The Hundred Secret Senses" by Amy Tan is in chapter twelve. In Kwan's previous life, she liked Yinban which is described to be a very serious person who is able to speak multiple languages. Yinban discovered that Miss Banner was trying to run away. He decides to keep this a secret and the two grow closer together as time passes. Kwan is that life notices the pair always being together and say "Even though they spoke in English, I could see that she would start a thought and he would finish it. Then he would speak, stare at her, and misplace his mind, and she would find words that he lost"(pg180). Without understanding English, Kwan, in her past life, knew through body language and tone of their voices what was happening.
