BOOK CLUB RESPONSE #2

One scene that highlights a language difference in "The Hundred Secret Senses" by Amy Tan is in chapter twelve. In Kwan's previous life, she liked Yinban which is described to be a very serious person who is able to speak multiple languages. Yinban discovered that Miss Banner was trying to run away. He decides to keep this a secret and the two grow closer together as time passes. Kwan is that life notices the pair always being together and say "Even though they spoke in English, I could see that she would start a thought and he would finish it. Then he would speak, stare at her, and misplace his mind, and she would find words that he lost"(pg180). Without understanding English, Kwan, in her past life, knew through body language and tone of their voices what was happening. I think Tan created this scene to show that language can be shown by physical factors like body language and the tone of voice. No matter the language, the tone of voice is important in identif...

1-page Individual Response After discussion Lead

In the discussion my group and I held in class, in the beginning the discussion was a little slow but ended well at the end. Everyone had good responses to the questions we proposed. We introduced the themes of identity,  love , and culture. In class we presented two videos that connect greatly to the themes of love and identity. In the first video we showed, Fresh off the Boat, a sitcom based on an Asian American boy and his family who recently moved to the suburbs of Orlando from a Chinatown in Washington D.C. In an attempt to assimilate with the all American kids at his school, Eddie wants to bring“ white people lunch” to school. I chose this video because it relates to the feelings Olivia felt when she was younger. Olivia was always embarrassed or ashamed to be seen with Kwan because then, she will be called a "dumb chink" by the other kids in her neighborhood. Throughout the book, Olivia struggles to find her own identity. In the beginning of the story, Kwa...

The Book Club Project : The Hundred Secret Senses--> 3 QUOTES w/analysis AND Open Ended Questions

The major themes(we picked) in the book: Identity Love Culture Quotes Quote 1: “I wish I knew more about Chinese history.”(319) Analysis: This quote has to do with culture. Olivia grew up in an American household and in the past has hated that part of her but after coming to China she wanted to know more about her history. This also plays into wanting to know who she is. While holding a book from long ago, she reads the date of an old music box, Olivia still remains skeptical about things like past life and yin people. Quote 2: “I think Kwan intended to  show me the world is not a place but the vastness of the soul. And is nothing more than love, limitless, endless, all that moves us forward knowing what is true.”(358) Analysis: This quote has to do with Love. As long as you have love and you believe that love will continue on, then it will. Quote 3: "And believing in ghosts-that's believing that love never dies. If people we love die, the...

Habits "Planning and Replanning" Q/D #14

" The best way to see your writing with fresh eyes is to set your draft aside- for a day is thats all you have, or for longer if possible. When you pick it up again, you'll be able to see more clearly whats working and w hats not"(pg.216, Para. 4) When a writing assignment is assigned to me, I prefer to finish it in one sitting. I found that it is a very insufficient way to complete my assignments because I end up getting stressed about how I can finish my assignment. As a result, I feel my work is unsatisfactory to me but by that time it would have already been too late to revise it because I had turned it in already. I think this would be a helpful method for me so I don't cram all the info into one assignment and have not time to revise it.
