Book Club Response #2

One scene that highlights a language difference in "The Hundred Secret Senses" by Amy Tan is in chapter twelve. In Kwan's previous life, she liked Yinban which is described to be a very serious person who is able to speak multiple languages. Yinban discovered that Miss Banner was trying to run away. He decides to keep this a secret and the two grow closer together as time passes. Kwan is that life notices the pair always being together and say "Even though they spoke in English, I could see that she would start a thought and he would finish it. Then he would speak, stare at her, and misplace his mind, and she would find words that he lost"(pg180). Without understanding English, Kwan, in her past life, knew through body language and tone of their voices what was happening. I think Tan created this scene to show that language can be shown by physical factors like body language and the tone of voice. No matter the language, the tone of voice is important in identif...

Anzaldúla Q/D #13

"Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity- I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself"(pg.7, Para, 26) In most places in America, many people who come from a different background are teased because they pronounce some English words a little differently. Regardless, I feel English is a universal language that can be expressed in many way. I can relate when Anzadúla emphasizes the importance of taking pride in ones own language. Growing up, I have always restrained myself from speaking Chinese because I felt it was embarrassing. However, through a series of events, I have steadily learned to take pride in my language.

Young PDF Q/D#12

"Code meshing is the new code switching; it's multidialectalism and pluralingualism in one speech act, in one paper"(Pg 5.Para.21) I think code meshing is important to understand each others cultures. From the way we speak, we infer the background of the speaker which may induce stereotypes or expectations of how the speaker should act. Code meshing allows better communication if we knew more dialects to engage in better understanding.

Q/D #11 Amy Tan

" But I do think that the language spoken in the family, especially in immigrant families which are more insular, plays a large role in shaping the language of the child."(Para.14) In my case, I do not feel my parents have impacted the way I speak English. I believe my siblings and my environment played a bigger part in my ability to speak English. At home, my parents and I only speak in Taishanese. Most of my habits of speech come from my communicating with my siblings since I spend most of my time with them.

Q/D #10 Dean

" A  discourse  community  is a group  of  people who are unified by similar patterns  of  language use, shared assumptions, common knowledge, and patallel habits  of  interpretation. "(Para.4) When I read this quote it made me think of the relations with my asian grandparents. I was born in  California and my grandparents were born in China. When I communicate with them in Chinese I find that sometimes they would look at me strange and say "huh". As the reading mentions, people can speak the same language but being fluent is different. You have to understand the languages culture and habits.
