Habits "Exploring" Q/D #8

"The idea behind all this preplanning is to protect you from getting lost while mucking about in the endless thicket of information that's out there. That seems sensible if you think research...confirming result. That is, when this approach is followed, it's no accident that the end results are unsurprising;the whole point of this approach to doing research is that there will be no surprises!"(75)

This quote got me thinking, if research was meant so that there will be no surprises, then what is the purpose of doing research if you know the outcome. It seems like a waste of time. On the other hand, the reading introduces the idea of "going down a rabbit hole". This is the idea that when you research about a topic, it prompts you to want to research related topics. In my opinion, everyone should know about this idea. Researching about a topic that leads to another will result in unpredicted findings that can help the person doing the researching grow as a person and academically.

Book Club Response #1 "The Hundred Secret Senses"

Q: How does the character form your book 'read the world' so far? A:    Before Olivia's dad died of kidney failure, he revealed he had another daughter in China from his first marriage. Kwan is the name of the sister who is from China. Olivia never felt loved by her mother who was always going out leaving Kwan to take care of Olivia and her siblings. For this reason Olivia resented Kwan because she was more of a mother than her own mother. Overtime Kwan influenced Olivia's imagination or stories and eventually she even learned Chinese reluctantly. Olivia reads the world by how Kwan always influenced and stuck with Olivia. Olivia narrates the times she spent with her sister and re-experieces that by re-telling her experiences. Kwan always shared her beliefs with Olivia and that shaped who she is as the person who is narrating from the future.
